Agenda - Branding Code
Presentation by Alan Jones

However you look at it clients are requiring more and more branding in their digital content, it's no longer just 'look and feel'.

While everyone else is specializing these two fairly diverse disciplines are merging; designers are coding and coders are designing, and it's an open field for those who can do both.

I'll give a few tips on getting good at branding your code:

  • Simplifying font options. (it's easy to do and complicated if you don't.)
  • Working with a brand manager. (hitting targets with subjective bullets.)
  • Building websites around existing brands. (how to create a site that works with a logo and brand identity.)
  • Constructing/launching a brand with a website. (create immediate interest in a new website.)
  • Designing banner adverts (or Facebook ads).
  • Working with limited tools.
  • Choosing your words.
  • I'll also be giving some logo design pointers.
  • If you're asked to design a logo should you say 'no'?
  • What if you're not creative?
  • How much should you charge?
  • Is there a recipe for designing a logo?

    •  Lots of useful, interesting info. Alan is a great speaker.
    •  Alan did an excellent job of introducing the various aspects of branding. He covered the principles of branding in a practical, hands-on context. Even better, he got a lot of good discussion going with an group that contained a wide range of experience and I think everyone came away knowing more about branding and with much to think about. Thanks, Alan

Alan Jones gave a wonderful presentation and led discussion on branding. His thoughtful presentation covered what branding is, why it's important, and showed examples of good and not-so-good attempts at branding. Alan talked specifically about logo design and the importance of having a logo and brand that coincide with your offline, physical presence and business philosophy.
    •  The presentation was well prepared with concrete examples. For example, the illustration on how one can improve a logo such as “Planthaven” was an excellent lesson.
    •  Well organized, with excellent graphics in the projected part of the presentation. Very good overview of the importance of branding and the part of visual elements such as logos in that effort.
    •  Thanks Alan, for the great presentation! I love pretty much everything about branding and really enjoyed your perspectives. Thanks for adding the costing part as well...pretty much my least favorite part of my work. Thanks also to Eric for 3 years of organizing this great group!
    •  Fantastic presentation! Relevant and useful information presented in an easy to understand and entertaining format that got members involved in some good discussion. So glad I was able to attend and gain knowledge from Alan. This is a monthly meeting I definitely never want to miss.
    •  Extremely informative. Thanks for setting it up and thanks to Alan for sharing his expertise!
    •  Great meeting last night. Thanks, Alan! Excellent presentation. You gave me a lot of things to think about.
